Read this before you order roadside banners

This catches organisers out every year. Advertising on or beside the public highway generally needs consent from the local highway authority, and the rules differ county by county. Some allow event banners for a fixed period if you notify them. Some want an application weeks in advance. Some will take unauthorised banners down without warning and charge you for it.

Ring your county council highways team before you commission the artwork, not after. Tell us which authority you are dealing with and we will size the banner to whatever they permit.

What we tell everyone

Mesh, not solid PVC, on exposed sites. A solid 3m banner in a crosswind is a sail. It will tear at the eyelets or take the fence with it.
Six words maximum on a roadside banner. Event name, date, arrow. Nobody reads a web address at 50mph.
Leave the year off if you can. A banner without a date goes back in the shed. One saying 2027 is landfill in October.
Order a spare. Banners get stolen, cut down and blown away. An emergency reprint in the final fortnight costs far more than a fourth banner in February.

Unlike leaflets and programmes, banners and signage are standard rated at 20%. There is no relief available. We quote them on a separate line so your treasurer can see exactly what is what.
